Petit Papa Noël

Year: 1946
Composer: Raymond Vincy and Henri Martinet
Lyricist: Raymond Vincy and Henri Martinet
Origin: France
Singer: Tino Rossi (Original)

A Christmas song from a movie - Tino Rossi acted and sang this song in the musical 'Destins'.

Pour voir si tu m'as apporté

It's a beautiful Christmas night
Snow spreads its white coat
And eyes lift toward the sky
On their knees, small children
Before closing their eyelids
Say one last request
Sweet Daddy Christmas
When you come down from the sky
With toys by the thousands
Don't forget my little shoe
But before leaving
You must cover yourself well
Outside you will be so cold
It's a little because of me
I can't wait for it to get light
To see if you have brought me
All the lovely toys that I see in dreams
And that I ordered from you
Sweet Daddy Christmas
When you come down from the sky
With toys by the thousands
Don't forget my little shoe
And when you are on your beautiful cloud
Come first to our house
I wasn't always very well behaved
But I ask for your forgiveness
Sweet Daddy Christmas
When you come down from the sky
With toys by the thousands
Don't forget my little shoe
Sweet Daddy Christmas

I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke

Year: 1971
Composer: Billy Davis
Lyricist: Billy Davis (Bill Backer for the slogan)
Origin: America
Singer: The Hillside Singers (Original)

This must be the most catchy jingle that has stayed with me since childhood days!
Unlike my mum and a dear friend Jeanette, who swear by Coke as the ultimate thirst quencher, I am never a fan of any soda.  However this is my way of thanking the creative advertising team of The Coca Cola Company and its advertising agency McCann-Erickson for the memories.

I'd like to buy the world a home, and furnish it with love,

Grow apple trees and honey bees, and snow white turtle doves.
I'd like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony,
I'd like to buy the world a Coke and keep it company.

Chorus:
I'd like to teach the world to sing

In perfect harmony

I'd like to buy the world a Coke
And keep it company
That's the real thing.

(Repeat chorus)
I'd like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony
I'd like to buy the world a Coke
And keep it company
That's the real thing

Chorus 2:
What the world wants today
Coca-Cola (background)
Is the real thing

(Repeat chorus 2)
What the world wants today
Coca-Cola (background)
Is the real thing

I'd like to teach the world to sing
Sing with me (background)
In perfect harmony
I'd like to buy the world a Coke
And keep it company
That's the real thing

(Repeat chorus)
I'd like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony
I'd like to buy the world a Coke
And keep it company
That's the real thing.

(Chorus 2)
What the world wants today
Coca-Cola (background)
Is the real thing

(Repeat chorus 2)
What the world wants today
Coca-Cola (background)
Is the real thing

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

Year: 1855
Composer: William H. Cummings' adaptation (1855) of Felix Mendelssohn's cantata  (1840)
Lyricist: Charles Wesley (1739)
Origin: United Kingdom

Of course I can pick all videos by King's College Choir who does no wrong, but this video of the Choir at St.Paul's Cathedral has the best congregation singing atmosphere

Sing-along with Amy Grant flawless rendition:

Hark the herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled"
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim:
"Christ is born in Bethlehem"
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"

Christ by highest heav'n adored
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come
Offspring of a Virgin's womb
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity
Pleased as man with man to dwell
Jesus, our Emmanuel
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"

Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings
Ris'n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"

Happy Xmas (War Is Over)

Year: 1971
Composer: John Lennon, Yoko Ono
Lyricist: John Lennon, Yoko Ono
Origin: America
Singer: John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Harlem Community Choir (Original)

My favorite version:

Sing-along with Celine Dion

Yoko Ono whispers: "Happy Christmas, Kyoko" (Kyoko Chan Cox is Yoko's daughter with Anthony Cox)
John Lennon whispers: "Happy Christmas, Julian" (Julian is John's son with Cynthia)

So this is Christmas and what have you done,Another year over, a new one just begun.

And so this is Christmas, I hope you have fun,
The near and the dear ones, the old and the young.

A very merry Christmas and a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one without any fears.

And so this is Christmas for weak and for strong,
The rich and the poor ones, the road is so long.

And so happy Christmas for black and for white
For the yellow and red ones let's stop all the fights.

A very merry Christmas and a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one without any fear.

And so this is Christmas and what have we done
Another year over, a new one just begun.

And so happy Christmas we hope you have fun
The near and the dear ones, the old and the young.

A very merry Christmas and a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one without any fear.

War is over if you want it, war is over now.

Tu Scendi Dalle Stelle / From Starry Skies Descending

Year: 1744
Composer: Alphonsus Maria de Liguori
Lyricist: Alphonsus Maria de Liguori
Origin: Italy

Compare to recordings by famous sopranos and outstanding tenors like Andrea Boceli or even Luciano Pavarotti, I still find the following version the most adorable:

Makes you wanna sing-along to the following video:

Tu scendi dalle stelle,
O Re del Cielo,
e vieni in una grotta,
al freddo al gelo.
O Bambino mio Divino
Io ti vedo qui a tremar,
O Dio Beato
Ahi, quanto ti costò
l'avermi amato!
A te, che sei del mondo
il Creatore,
mancano panni e fuoco;
O mio Signore!
Caro eletto Pargoletto,
Quanto questa povertà
più mi innamora!
Giacché ti fece amor
povero ancora!
From starry skies descending,
Thou comest, glorious King,
A manger low Thy bed,
In winter's icy sting;
O my dearest Child most holy,
Shudd'ring, trembling in the cold!
Great God, Thou lovest me!
What suff'ring Thou didst bear,
That I near Thee might be!
Thou art the world's Creator,
God's own and true Word,
Yet here no robe, no fire
For Thee, Divine Lord.
Dearest, fairest, sweetest Infant,
Dire this state of poverty.
The more I care for Thee,
Since Thou, o Love Divine,
Will'st now so poor to be.
